Specialty Materials RSW Recruiting Solutions Blog

March 16, 2017

Welcome to my first blog. Please return often to RSWRecruitingSolutions.com and future blogs. I started my recruiting company RSW Recruiting Solutions in 2017 focused on specialty materials. I am excited about being a part of the innovation, growth, new applications and material businesses reorganizing and upgrading to compete for the new industry challenges and applications.

It is an exciting time to be in the materials industry in Ohio.

Ohio and the mid-west continues to be the center for materials and manufacturing excellence. New technologies, materials and processes are leading a resurgence in Ohio. Many companies are increasing their commercial and technical capability to meet future needs.

Emerging 3D technologies, while small, is growing and allowing manufacturers the creative freedom to increase speed to market, efficiency, new geometries that couldn’t be created before, part consolidation and lower costs. Ohio is home to three National Networks for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) institutes: America Makes, which is headquartered in Youngstown, is focused on 3D printing/additive manufacturing. American Lightweight Metals and Advanced Composites Manufacturing are two consortium partnerships leading the development of new materials and advanced manufacturing. Together, with Ohio businesses, these institutes are advancing technologies and creating business ecosystems that position Ohio as a leader in advanced manufacturing.

GE is creating a $140 million additive development center in Ohio north of their Evendale plant. The GE Aviation Additive Development Center focuses on new components that can be produced with GE’s 3D additive manufacturing technology. This center will ultimately create more than 50 new jobs.

GE, close to Ohio, is investing $39 million in a new manufacturing facility that will drive innovation and implementation of additive manufacturing across the company. The Center for Additive Technology Advancement (CATA) – located near Pittsburg will be the flagship center for additive manufacturing, focused on developing and implementing industrial applications from which all GE businesses – and in turn GE customers – can benefit. This will create 50 high-tech engineering jobs.

Ohio Material Companies investing and focused on growth:

Harbison Walker International (HWI) –  recently announced that it is investing $30 million to construct a new state-of-the-art monolithic refractory manufacturing facility. The facility will be located along the Ohio River Valley in the northern Kentucky/southern Ohio region of the U.S.

Mar-Bal, Inc. –  expands in Northeast Ohio – Within five years Mar-Bal will double their workforce and invest approximately $15.0 million.

PolyOne – a global provider of specialized polymer materials, invested $85 million to continues its growth focus on composites with the 2016 acquisition of two specialty businesses from Gordon Holdings and forming PolyOne Advanced Composites.

Upcoming material conferences in Ohio I will be attending:

Ceramics Expo – has become the annual focal point for the North American ceramic community and all the user industries that rely on ceramic technologies. The massively expanded event stands as a unique showcase for all the latest start materials, industrial equipment, technical ceramic components, processing expertise, analysis and testing devices, thermal technologies and precision finishing systems that keep this sector at the forefront of manufacturing advances.  http://www.ceramicsexpousa.com/

Advanced Design & Manufacturing Cleveland –  showcases five zones on one show floor: Packaging, Automation & Robotics, Design & Manufacturing, Plastics, and Medtech. Over two days, hundreds of leading suppliers showcase solutions in 3D printing, rapid prototyping, new materials, components, IoT, software, sensors, wearable devices, digital health, cybersecurity, and much more across the advanced design and manufacturing space.  http://admcleveland.com/

Material Blogs of Interest:

I am always looking for interesting material industry blogs. I share one on the growth in plastics. How growth in employment is being held back by automation and the challenges created for workforce development. Companies are still hiring at high rates for specific technical and commercial needs:

Some surprising (to me) facts about plastics employment
